this whole Judeo-Christian vs Arab battle thats been raging since the beginning of time (1982, when i was born, i mean, thats all i know) is really getting rather old. i feel like we in the west have given Israel a blank check of good will. i think its time to cap that withdraw. sit Israel down and have a nice chat with them.

feel free to use that, Secretary Clinton. you know, just say, my friend dano helped me prepare for the negotiations. and really, wouldnt a little verbal smack around on Israel not only make them back off, but show some good will to the neighbors, who weve either ignored or told to pound sand? but what do i know, its not like Jews, Arabs, and Christians all lived within a few miles of eachother where im from. oh, wait, they did. i actually went to high school with all of the above.

pins and collars
its a slow day at work, so what do i do? read papers of course.
i read a couple of articles today, one on Obama's dismissal of the flag lapel pin and what it may symbolize. then i read a peice on Clinton's new look as a fighter and a blue collar candidate. you already know im for Obama, so i might as well cram some more reasons why im right and why you should listen to me in your bloated gullets. get out of the Fox News, mountebank is here, and i brought candy!!!
the lapel pin issue is a non issue. gluing a Cadillac hood ornament to a Geo Metro doesnt change the fact that its a Geo Metro. all it does is set Obama apart from those who play the pandering game. who say and do superficial things to gain popularity. the shitty thing is that it works. the good thing is that those who are paying attention realize that Obama is crafting his own brand, and not slapping on the sticker of a predecessor, or a vague ideal. patriotism is great. false patriotism is terrible. wearing a stupid pin or putting a 'these colors dont run' bumper sticker on your car dont make you a patriot. what makes you a patriot is defending what your country stands for and stands on.
Obama is willing to take a look at the ridiculous idea of a gas tax holiday, and call it what it is, a pander. he tells us that there is no easy answer. there is no quick fix. the country is in a rough spot. sure you can paint a rusty ass car, and it might look good, but 3 months down the line, the rust is worse and it looks like hell again. but if you take the longer and costlier path of body work and a good paint job, your ride will look nice for years.
have you noticed that i use a lot of car metaphors? its like im from detroit or something...
to me it seems that Obama is willing to take the hard look. to find the right path, not necessarily the easy path, and to tell us the truth. meanwhile mr straight-talk has flipped so many of his positions since 2000 that i have lost most of the respect that i had for him. he was once the rebel that Obama is now. and Hillary, Wellesley educated and Wife of a former president who has made $109 million since he left office 8 years age, has cast herself as blue collar, a woman of the people.
when Bill Clinton was running for office, he and Hillary were characterized as ivy league liberal elitists. now that label is being stuck upon Obama. the thing is, it can stick to both. i would say that Obama's past is much more connected to the blue collar, while Hillary's past is largely upper middle class. there is nothing wrong with either, but if were labeling things, lets apply the right one.
Hillary was only able to adopt the blue collar label once Obama knocked her off her high horse. now that she's had to fight back from as an underdog, she has recast herself as a fighter and a blue collar voice. look, as i said before, i want my president to be better than me. to be above blue collar jobs, but to care about all of America. i want my president to be well educated so he or she is smart enough to make the right decisions. i want a president who doesnt pander to popular issues just because theyre popular. issues are generally much more complex than black and white. i want a president who can look at the whole issue, and make a decision on the reality, not on preconceived notions or just because its a hot button.
the gas issue is more complex than just people bitching about the prices at the pump. fuel is where it is because of global demands for it, and an ever dwindling supply. a summer hiatus on the tax will only serve to delay the inevitable and delay real action on a way forward. Obama has indicated that he is willing to adjust or remove the ethanol minimums in order to reduce food prices.
while McCain is busy selling out to the religious right and the Bushies and Clinton is playing the role of Rocky, Obama is out there being who he is and doing what he does, addressing the real issues.

my opinions are mine, but they arent necessarily correct. if nothing else i hope that they make you think. if you want to prove me wrong, please do. do some research and show me where i went wrong. ultimately we need to have an intelligent and engaged electorate to get this country back on track. if you plan to vote in november, do your research and know why you vote the way you do. voting for the sake of voting and without knowing can do more harm than good. of course i want everyone to vote, but i want them to do so well informed.

OMG!
i want to crawl under a rock and wait bush out. i am completely incredulous as most of what he said in a speech this morning. its hard to beleive that any informed person can say such things. they are either ridiculous lies, or he is living in a different world than i live in. and i live a long walk away from the white house. somehow he seems to be worlds away.
lets start with Hamas and Carter. they met last week. Bush wasnt happy.
He declined to criticize former president Jimmy Carter for meeting last week with leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, but made clear that he will continue to shun the group, which he said is undermining Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.
as Carter said on NPR's Diane Rheem Show, you cant engage Palestine in negotions without Hamas. they won legitimate elections and represent half of the Palestinian population. Bush and Isreal wont even talk to them because they are "a terrorist organization." not talking to people who disagree with you wont make them change. you cant ignore a problem away.
also, in the Carter interview today he said that all Arab countries would leave Israel alone if they just went back to their 1967 boundaries. not only that, they would assume diplomatic and trade relations. Israel wont back down from what is essentially and invasion of another country's land. i dont understand our unwavering support for Israel.
next, Bush is blaming congress for our economical woes. once again i say it to a republican, you cant take the effect and make it the cause. the economy was churning along just fine with quite a surplus at the end of the Clinton years. an unjust and wholly unnecessary war have squandered that surplus and given us a tremendous debt to the Chinese. to add insult to injury, Bush and a republican congress cut taxes for the richest of the rich, which by the way McCain wants to make permanent.
now that congress is refusing to pass laws at a whim to make life a little easier, Bush decries them as the cause. in reality, Bush and the republicans shat the bed and congress is making him sit in it for a while.
gas is expensive. bummer. get a hybrid. i have trouble finding sympathy on that subject. i pay the same prices at the pump as everyone else. its the price you pay for dependence on gasoline. now it seems foolish that we dont have an alternate, eh. and suspending fuel taxes for the summer is stupid. it wont help much, people will be super pissed when the taxes go back into effect, and as Barack Obama pointed out it will take money form necessary highway and bridge work. perhaps you forgot about that bridge in Minneapolis that fell down? removing the taxes is like putting a bandge on a broken leg. sure you may slow or stop the bleeding, but you still cant walk. take the time and care to do it right so that you can heal, and in a couple months walk. i am so fucking tired of Bush's fucking bandaid solutions!
food prices are going up, too. there i do have sympathy. as i said before, we need to eliminate the bipartisan quotas on biofuels as it is taking food out of the supply.
i have also addressed mortgages. we should try and help legit home buyers from ending up in foreclosure. investors took a risk and got bit in the ass on it. tough luck.
George Bush needs to man up, admit he made mistakes. take a real hard look and try to fix what he has done. its hard to have any respect for someone who cant admit that hes wrong, instead of righting the wrong, he comes up with a hackneyed fix that wont do any good in the long run. i cant wait til he is gone. i hope so hard that whoever wins is string enough to look at the problems and com up with real solutions. no preconceived notions, no partisan politics, no bandaids. do what is best for America and the world. the one candidate i see capable of doing that has a funny name and a good portion of America thinks is a Muslim.

stupid Krauthammer
so i just read this article in the post. Mr Krauthammer not only has a funny name, but also has a problem with the assertion that McCain wants to occupy Iraq for a century.
McCain never clarified hos position. Look at the quotes the he provides.
Asked at a New Hampshire campaign stop about possibly staying in Iraq 50 years, John McCain interrupted -- "Make it a hundred" -- then offered a precise analogy to what he envisioned: "We've been in Japan for 60 years. We've been in South Korea for 50 years or so." Lest anyone think he was talking about prolonged war-fighting rather than maintaining a presence in postwar Iraq, he explained: "That would be fine with me, as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed."
the thing is that Americans are being killed and wounded on a daily basis. another thing is that we were allies from the beginning with South Korea, and Japan submitted and accepted our presence. Iraq neither wanted us there to begin with and isnt submitting in any way. i dont see how you can claim that we will stay in Iraq for any time and expect that no harm will come to our troops.
Krauthammer attacks the Democrats for making the jump from a presence to a war, but with the previous thoughts in mind, its more of a baby step than a jump. and if McCain was thinking something else, wouldnt he have called out Obama and Clinton for distorting his words? has he?
the title of the article is "A Rank Falsehood." what Obama and Clinton claim about McCain is not a falsehood at all. its an interpretation given the statement and the conditions in Iraq. the falsehood is the idea that American troops can remain in Iraq without being harmed. its just not a viable idea. im not saying that some, perhaps many, want us there, and need us there. but there is no way we can stay without casualties. there are enough people there who hate us for being there. who will stop at nothing to make us leave, and it is naive to think that our soldiers could remain there without a threat to their safety. Iraq is not Japan. Iraq is not South Korea.
perhaps this is a misunderstanding. but if McCain misunderstands the situation should he really be president? but i am fairly sure that McCain does understand, which is why you havent heard him decry with the Democrats are saying. but that doesnt stop people like Krauthammer from defending an untenable position. and since McCain hasnt corrected Clinton and Obama, then it must not be that far from the truth. keep that in mind as you choose who to vote for.

dumb-o-crats
sweet title, huh? yea, i thought of that all by myself.
in all seriousness, the democrats need to get their shit together. Florida and Michigan moved up their primaries, violating party rules, so the democrats didnt count them. now that Obama and Clinton are nose to nose, maybe they do want to count those states.
thing is, they can use the previous numbers, Obama wasnt even on Michigan's ballot. so that means a new one. but they are talking $10mil for a new one. i dont know about Florida, but the mitten cannot afford that on public money. so there have been all sorts of ideas, the latest being a mail in vote.
wake up, dummies. its called the internet. set up a website. send party members a letter or email with a login and password to get on and vote. the party can set this up and run it easily an inexpensively, and they should handle it. it shouldnt fall to the states or the voters, because its their own squabbling that brought this about. kids have polls on their myspace pages. for free. it takes like 5 minutes. FOR FREE.

Effect and Cause
i was listening to Icky Thump by the White Stripes on the way to work this morning. i have always really like the last song, Effect and Cause. and i kind of thought that it was the best come back to what John McCain has been spouting lately.
he has said repeatedly that 'we are where we are.' which has about as much substance as Jessica Simpson. really, i thought that we are where we were from what hes been saying. all the while claiming that he has the record to prove he is the one to lead. but then he missed the vote on the economic stimulus package. the economy has got to be in the top 3 of just about everybody's big issues this election year. if not the issue that determines who they will vote for.
so McCain is basically saying "dont look at the past, we need to focus on the present. and what makes me best to lead in the present is my past, which shouldnt be looked at, but trust me its what qualifies me." he is pulling a Bush/Cheney and riding the Iraq war, terrorism, and fear to success. he has made these issues his cause, but in reality they are the three musketeers' effect and legacy, not the cause. I dont understand how the republicans have been able to run on the same issues for more than 6 years.
now if we focus on what McCain is doing now, its not so bad, but what he has proposed for the future is a little scary. he has admitted that he doesnt know jack about the economy and says that we will be in Iraq for another 100 years. i dont understand how people can consider voting for a candidate that says these things. in contrast Obama has denounced NAFTA in an appeal to bring back jobs lost to our neighbors to the north and south. mostly south. he has also pushed to withdraw troops as quickly as possible and push for talks with Iran and other hostile nations. while this sounds better to me than McCain, its still has its problems as Michael Gerson of the Washington Post lays out.
the issue i have here is that McCain is deliberately redirecting our attention to a cause that is really the effect of what he is in large part responsible for. Obama and Clinton have made promises that are unlikely to be honored, mostly because they sound good, the idea is right, but as president all actions must be calculated, thought through thoroughly, and planned out. one cant shoot first and ask questions later or you end up in a prolonged conflict with people you dont really understand, hemorrhaging money in a place where you didnt belong in in the first place.
what we cant do is allow McCain to get away with turning a horrible thing that he is at least partially responsible for into a cause that he can ride to the white house. its like if i came into your house and crapped in your bed, then said 'i am the one to resolve this problem! over the next month we will use a tooth pick to slowly remove the shit, then leave the sheets on the bed for the next year, and maybe, sometime after that, we will rinse off the sheets.' when any idiot can see that you kick the asshole who fucked up your house out, clean up the mess, and get on with life.
people keep saying that this is an historic election, what with a black guy, and girl, and and old white guy vying for the presidency. but its also historic because of what is at stake. the economy, the war, the renewal of real diplomacy, the restoration of fundamental American rights, and restoring the world's respect for the US. i have been pointing the finger at McCain, but i have little more confidence in Clinton, and a bit more for Obama, but i fear that none of them is really bringing America together and proposing realistic solutions.
like i said before, ill probably become disenfranchised by the time of the election and vote for someone like Ralph Nader. while i dont agree with all that he says, he does address the issues at hand, propose solutions to them, and seem to actually care about America and Americans.

now if we focus on what McCain is doing now, its not so bad, but what he has proposed for the future is a little scary. he has admitted that he doesnt know jack about the economy and says that we will be in Iraq for another 100 years. i dont understand how people can consider voting for a candidate that says these things. in contrast Obama has denounced NAFTA in an appeal to bring back jobs lost to our neighbors to the north and south. mostly south. he has also pushed to withdraw troops as quickly as possible and push for talks with Iran and other hostile nations. while this sounds better to me than McCain, its still has its problems as Michael Gerson of the Washington Post lays out.
the issue i have here is that McCain is deliberately redirecting our attention to a cause that is really the effect of what he is in large part responsible for. Obama and Clinton have made promises that are unlikely to be honored, mostly because they sound good, the idea is right, but as president all actions must be calculated, thought through thoroughly, and planned out. one cant shoot first and ask questions later or you end up in a prolonged conflict with people you dont really understand, hemorrhaging money in a place where you didnt belong in in the first place.
what we cant do is allow McCain to get away with turning a horrible thing that he is at least partially responsible for into a cause that he can ride to the white house. its like if i came into your house and crapped in your bed, then said 'i am the one to resolve this problem! over the next month we will use a tooth pick to slowly remove the shit, then leave the sheets on the bed for the next year, and maybe, sometime after that, we will rinse off the sheets.' when any idiot can see that you kick the asshole who fucked up your house out, clean up the mess, and get on with life.
people keep saying that this is an historic election, what with a black guy, and girl, and and old white guy vying for the presidency. but its also historic because of what is at stake. the economy, the war, the renewal of real diplomacy, the restoration of fundamental American rights, and restoring the world's respect for the US. i have been pointing the finger at McCain, but i have little more confidence in Clinton, and a bit more for Obama, but i fear that none of them is really bringing America together and proposing realistic solutions.
like i said before, ill probably become disenfranchised by the time of the election and vote for someone like Ralph Nader. while i dont agree with all that he says, he does address the issues at hand, propose solutions to them, and seem to actually care about America and Americans.
woe is me. when i think about the future, i get scared. maybe ill move to Denmark, not have to worry about social issues, work 3o hours a week, and stay out of the worlds business. except for the occasional inflammatory cartoon...
